Report: Devils sign forward Jaromir Jagr

The Devils found some much-needed offense in the form of veteran Jaromir Jagr.

ESPN reports New Jersey has agreed to a one-year deal with the 41-year-old forward.

Jagr played with the Stars and Bruins last season and was a surprise spark for Boston in their Stanley Cup Final run. He didn’t score any postseason goals, but had 10 assists in 22 games.

He had 16 goals and 19 assists in 45 games between the Stars and Bruins.

Jagr will provide at least some offense to replace the production lost by Ilya Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk announced his sudden retirement from the NHL two weeks ago. He left $77 million on the table with his Devils contract.

He then signed a four-year deal with SKA St. Petersburg of the Russian KHL on July 15. He played there during the NHL lockout and had expressed a desire to stay if he didn’t have responsibilities with his NHL contract.

Jagr is a future Hall of Famer, who has played 19 seasons in the NHL. He’s spent time most notably with the Penguins, where he established his greatness from 1990-2001. He also played for the Capitals, Rangers and Flyers previous to last season.

He has 681 career goals and 1,007 career assists. He won the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992 as well as a gold medal in 1998. He is a nine-time All Star, led the league in assists three times and points five times and is the NHL’s active leader in goals, assists, points, plus/minus and game-winning goals. He is tied for first all time in game-winning goals as well.
