NYCFC ‘targeting’ US international Mix Diskerud

NYCFC will likely be linked with many big names from across the soccer world over the coming months leading up to their inaugural season in MLS. One possible target appears to be United States international Mix Diskerud.

Metro New York has learned Diskerud has drawn “interest” from the expansion MLS side and that he could be a target as an acquisition over the next couple of months.

Multiple league sources tell Metro that Diskerud, a midfielder currently playing for Rosenborg in Norway, has drawn interest from NYCFC as the midfielder’s contract is up at the end of the year.

As a playmaker, he could be an ideal fit for the possession, quick-movement style preferred by head coach Jason Kreis. But a possible stumbling block could be his salary demands. Diskerud is a top earner in Norway and would likely want a designated player contract.

That might be a sticking point given that NYCFC and its deep pockets — the club is owned by Manchster City and the Yankees — will likely use their three designated player slots on marquee names.

This past weekend, Diskerud made a return to the soccer field, playing a full 90 minutes in his club’s draw after falling out of favor with the Norwegian giants. He debuted with the U.S. men’s national team in 2010 and has made 17 appearances and scored two goals.

NYCFC will begin their season in March 2015 and play at Yankee Stadium.
