Looters infiltrate post-Sandy city

Rockaway Beach during quieter times this summer.

A new concern has popped up in the wake of Hurricane Sandy: Looting.

Police sources told Metro on Wednesday morning that commercial burglaries had taken place in various areas of Brooklyn and Queens.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Thursday that 18 people were arrested after breaking into a Key Foods grocery store in Coney Island through a back door.

He added that two other people were arrested in Staten Island.

The NYPD set up 100 towers to create light in areas without power after dark, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

According to the Huffington Post, police were in Coney Island on Tuesday after looters hit banks, pharmacies and other stores in the area. At Mega Aid Pharmacy, the majority of the items stolen were prescription medications.

“I don’t even know what it’s going to take until we’re operational,” the pharmacy’s manager, Stan Gutkin, told the site. “This breaks the business. I don’t even know where to start.”

The Huffington Post also reported that potential looters were taking to Twitter to announce their plans, and that New York National Guard units were on duty on Long Island to watch for activity.

The New York Post also revealed that people were swiping things like electronics and clothes in the Rockaways, which were particularly ravaged in the storm.

Looting was a problem after both Hurricane Irene last year and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005.
