First, I will say I am a smoker. As far as the cost to an employer for smokers, I think people need to get off their high horses and leave us alone.
I work a full-time job and, until very recently, I also worked a part-time job. At my full-time job, I am at a desk, and I can say that as long as there is work to do, I don’t think about taking a smoke break. I am entitled to a 15-minute break in the morning and a half-hour lunch break.
I choose to eat my lunch at my desk. I didn’t spend 20 minutes to a half-hour on a personal call or email to one of my children or spend time talking non-work-related things with my fellow employees as they arrived.
The bottom line is if an employer has a smoking employee, see if they are doing their work and measuring up to the rest of the staff. Don’t just assume because they go out for a smoke they are less productive than the non-smoking employee.
