Sara Ramirez on her ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ love triangle

Arizona (Jessica Capshaw, left) and Callie (Sara Ramirez, right) are set to tie the knot on tomorrow’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” airing at 9 p.m. on ABC.

In the seventh season of “Grey’s Anatomy,” things have hardly been slowing down for Sara Ramirez’s character, Callie. After breaking up and making up with her girlfriend, Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), Callie now finds herself a mother — thanks to a fling with Mark (Eric Dane) while Arizona was in Malawi. Did we mention the child was delivered prematurely when Callie almost lost her life in a car accident? “It’s a very complex situation they find themselves in,” Ramirez says, putting it lightly.

“These people have ended up in such a complex situation emotionally, mentally, physically,” Ramirez says. “For Callie, she’s now having a child after wanting one for so long. There’s a lesbian community that is very much for ‘Calzona.’ And, you know, there are people that just don’t understand why anybody would stick around when your ex-partner went off and got pregnant with somebody else’s child and now you’re going to parent that child. I mean, it’s just so rich.”

The fans have certainly let their voices be heard on the matter, according to Ramirez. “I love the storyline, and I’m thrilled for what’s happened. It’s making a lot of people upset and a lot of people excited, but that’s a good thing,” she says. “Of course there’s, like, the Arizona team: ‘She had every right to break up with her. Callie was being horrible,’ blah, blah, blah. And then you’ve got the Callie team that’s like, ‘Why did Arizona break up with her? If she hadn’t broken up with her, she wouldn’t have slept with Mark, and we wouldn’t be here.’ So there’s so many ways you can look at it, so many perspectives.”

But what’s most exciting for Ramirez is the material she’ll get to work with going forward with such a complex storyline. “Assuming everything is going to be fine with the child, I think it’s really interesting what could happen for these people and how much the opportunity and potential to grow as a person [there is], and figuring out how you fit into this complex dynamic,” she says.
