‘Revenge’ recap: Episode 14, ‘Perception’

Revenge! REVEEEEEENNNGGGEEE!

If there’s one thing this show has taught us, it’s that looks aren’t always what they seem. And OK, also that a life of luxury in the Hamptons doesn’t seem like a bad call.

So let’s see, to get up to speed: fake-Emily and Daniel have their engagement photo shoot, Charlotte still doesn’t know David Clarke is her father, and Grandpa Grayson (Conrad’s dad) pays a visit. Jack’s still super-bummed that real-Em left him high and dry, and his curiosity about the situation only grows when he finds a long-lost Amanda/Mason interview tape hiding under his bed. He wants to watch it but dang, technology has come so far these days and nobody seems to have a tape player lying around anymore. Nobody except Nolan, that is. But fake-Em’s got Nolan on a tight leash, urging him to sway Jack away from watching it — she desperately doesn’t want Jack to see her vulnerable past. This is unfortunate news for real-Emily, though, because it means she’s caught in the cross-hairs again. Tied to fake-Em’s revenge plot, she must go against her own wishes and find a way retrieve the tape back from Jack without letting him know why she disappeared on him. Under fake-Em’s orders, she calls Jack and asks him to meet her at a motel to get the tape back. He shows up, but refuses to budge. He wants to know just what’s on the tape that’s so important to her. Real-Emily freaks, because she’s in love with Jack, and lets on that she’s not who she seems. When he comes back a second time looking for the tape, she comes thisclose to not budging, but ultimately hysterically chases down his car.

Let’s get back to the Graysons for a second. In a flashback, we see that Daniel and fake-Em had actually encountered each other before they “met” in the Hamptons this year — but fake-Em was in disguise, so Daniel doesn’t know it’s her.

Nolan makes an interesting move by hooking up a tape viewing party for he and Jack. OK, it’s not really a party, per se, but they do watch the tape. In a moment of vulnerability, Nolan asks Jack why he wants to watch it, and he replies that it can’t be worse than what he’s imagined. Ah, but what if it is? The tape is basically Amanda looking for Victoria, the woman who was always around when she was a kid because of her affair with David Clarke. Victoria was a loving presence for Amanda and in the tape she’s begging for her back, so she can help sort out the mess that’s unraveling in her life.

Onto the main event: the family engagement dinner. Fake-Emily has the video of her dad’s confession that he’s Charlotte’s father, and she’s ready to break the news to her half-sister. Grandpa Grayson is there, and he seems like a pretty good guy, but as we’ve learned, things aren’t always as they seem on this show.

They’re having a lovely dinner when all of a sudden Jack barges in, yelling at Victoria for not helping Amanda when she needed her the most. Charlotte’s like “yeah…what the eff is going on?” so Conrad spills the beans that David Clarke is in fact her real dad. Naturally, she doesn’t take it too well. Conrad also lets the guests know that his estranged wife wasn’t actually raped and that her affair with David Clarke was consensual and ongoing. Daniel’s all like, “no way, Mom, tell him he’s lying! Mom? Mom…? Why aren’t you telling him he’s ly — oh, good God, he’s not lying.” So that kind of puts a damper on the dinner.

Afterward, fake-Em heads back to her place, but it’s been broken into. Worse, the revenge box hidden under the floor is gone! In its place is an RSVP to the engagement party from Miss Emily Thorne. Guess we know who stole the box. Or maybe we don’t! Maybe this is all just a red herring!

Next week is a biggie — the Fire + Ice-themed engagement party! Maybe we’ll get some answers: Is Daniel really dead? Who kills him? Will real-Emily ever learn how to pronounce her words correctly?
