Once again, cable dominates the Emmy nominations

Don Draper (Jon Hamm) and Megan Draper (Jessica Pare) star in "Mad Men," nominated for 17 awards at the 64th annual Emmys.

Nominations for the annual Emmy Awards, honoring the best in television, were announced Thursday, with cable TV dominating the field once again. Perennial awards favorite HBO picked up a staggering 81 nominations for series like “Boardwalk Empire,” “Game of Thrones” and “Veep,” as well as movies and miniseries like “Hemingway and Gellhorn,” which earned 15 nominations alone. Meanwhile, cables series “American Horror Story,” from FX, and “Mad Men,” from AMC, tied for the most nominations for a single program, earning 17 each. Further proving cable’s creative force, the nominations for the 64th annual Emmys marks the first time no drama airing on one of the major broadcast networks received recognition in the best series category.

The Emmys will be awarded during a live broadcast  in Los Angeles on Sept. 23 on ABC, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting.
