VIDEO: SNL returns with Tina Fey, ‘Breaking Bad’ references
Saturday Night Live made a triumphant return and opened its 39th season with SNL veteran Tina Fey. Fey introduced six new cast members in her monologue and held up the episode with hilarious skits like a “Girls” spoof.
The episode was filled with “Breaking Bad” references that were comedy gold and lots of cameos by Aaron Paul, who plays Jesse Pinkman on the AMC show. Paul shined as a man whose friend got “like cancer sick” and couldn’t afford healthcare in the pre-Obamacare era, consequently engaging in meth-cooking and “not regular” murder. He also returned in character in an ad for an electronic meth pipe and as the Meth Nephew of Drunk Uncle on Weekend Update. New Weekend Update host Cecily Strong opened the segment by thanking her female predecessors, and Fey joined the newbie to offer some sage advice.
Fey’s strongest role was as new girl Blerta on a spoof trailer for the newest season of HBO’s “Girls.” Blerta played the perfect foil to self-involved characters Hannah, Jessa, Marnie and Shoshanna as they whined about their millennial problems. After Blerta informs Hannah that she also suffers from OCD, Hanna exclaims, “Cool! You’re obsessive-compulsive, too?” to which Blerta replies, “No, I have Old Cow Disease.”
