VIDEO: Pomegranate how-tos take over Reddit

For some reason, videos teaching viewers how to eat pomegranates are blowing up on Reddit. Two instructional “lifehack” videos on the art of pomegranate-eating are among the top 10 on Reddit’s video page and even a meme about giving “zero f–ks” on how to eat a pomegranate is in the top 100 on Reddit’s front page.

The first video was posted yesterday under the heading “The correct way to eat a pomegranate,” but the YouTube tutorial dates back to 2010. The woman in the video explains how to score and divide a pomegranate without having the messy seeds fly everywhere.

A second rival video surfaced hours later, surpassing the original. A Reddit user posted the video and added, “The ACTUAL CORRECT way to eat a pomegranate, as brought to you by this Middle Eastern guy.” This one showed a man who seems to be speaking in Arabic as he shows how to section a pomegranate and whack the seeds cleanly out of the pomegranate shell. As many Redditors lamented, however, he never eats the seeds, making the title a misnomer.

It’s a mystery as to why the demos have become so popular, other than the fact that the fruits are currently in season. Perhaps Redditors were intimidated by the difficult fruit but always wanted to try it. Or maybe pomegranate seeds still have the same mystical properties that sent Persephone to hell for a third of the year, according to Greek mythology. Whatever the reason, we hope this means fewer juice stains, whatever the method.
