Tom McCusker rolled his Honest Tom’s Taco Truck onto the local food truck scene in April 2009, offering breakfast and lunch tacos at Aviator Park, Clark Park and on the Drexel University campus. But the truck evolved into a restaurant in late December when Honest Tom’s Taco Shop opened its doors in West Philadelphia. “The winters were really rough — it was snowy and very cold,” McCusker says about the two winters his staff spent shivering in the truck. “Business lagged because of the weather, and the college kids also went away for breaks. Having the shop is so much easier. We have a home of our own and refrigeration!”
Open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Honest Tom’s offers breakfast tacos and burritos as well as locally roasted GreenStreet Coffee for the early morning crowd. The lunch and dinner menu currently boasts rice and bean, pork, chicken, sweet potato or beef tacos and burritos.
“Burritos and tacos are my favorite foods, but there was nowhere around where you could get them,” says McCusker — resident of Powelton Village — about the decision to set up shop in West Philly.
“And Clark Park has been so good to us, so we wanted to keep it in the neighborhood.”
