Skip the movies this Black Friday — bring the family to Broadway
Many families adopt the honorary tradition of seeing a movie together over the Thanksgiving weekend. And no one can deny them the right to sit back and let their delicious dinners (and second dinners) digest.
But this year, New Yorkers have a bonus option: live theater. Many Broadway productions have opted to add matinee performances — typically reserved for Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays — to Black Friday.
Some popular options for the whole family that will be playing an added 2 p.m. performance on Nov. 29 are “Annie,” “Big Fish,” “Cinderella,” “Kinky Boots,” “Matilda,” “Spider-Man” and “The Lion King.” (But yes, there’s also plenty of adult fare if you want to leave the little ones at home.)
A few of the city’s shows will even be running on Thanksgiving, including “Once,” “Chicago” and “The Phantom of the Opera.” Honestly, where would you rather be? Indoors in a cozy red velvet seat or braving the cold in line at Best Buy?
And if you’re planning in advance for next month, there are also extra shows on the calendar throughout the week of Christmas. Find complete holiday listings at Broadway.org.
