Marquis Vodka blends virtue and vice

Feeling guilty about heading to the bar tonight? Don’t feel so bad if you’re drinking for charity.

Marquis Vodka, newly-launched in New York, Florida, and California, donates 20 percent of its retail revenue to four charitable partners. Why? Because drinking and donating don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

“Marquis Vodka believes in a world where a vice should be tempered by virtue. This is why the brand is proud to donate 20 percent of its retail revenue to its charitable partners,” says a statement from Marquis.

Consumers get to decide exactly where that virtue is directed. By following the web address (MarquisVodka.com) on each bottle, you will be able to choose from four different charities, and instantly see the value of your contribution. Alternatively, you can scan the QR code on the bottle, which takes you to Marquis’ charitable giving app.

Here’s a breakdown of the charities, and what one bottle of Marquis vodka correlates to:

Meals on Wheels: One hot meal delivered to a senior citizen

The Trevor Project: Anti-bulling outreach to 10 LGBT adolescents

Blacksmith Institute: Five pounds of Borax given to miners in developing countries to reduce mercury use in gold extraction

Footprints: One maternity kit given to a pregnant woman in the Congo

If the consumer forgets (hey, it’s possible with vodka), or chooses not to participate, Marquis will evenly distribute twenty percent of the retail value among the four charities.

It’s hard to see the vice here.
