PG-13 movies have more violence than R movies

If you are the parent of a pre-teen or teen, you may want to monitor your child’s movie selections a little more carefully. According to a new study conducted by the Journal of Pediatrics, PG-13 movies have more guns, blood and gore than R-rated movies. R-rated movies may have more cursing, sex and nudity, but it’s PG-13 movies that use violence to score big at the box office.

Since PG-13 movies are aimed at a slightly younger audience than ones with an R rating, PG-13 movies are more action-based than R movies, which tend of have more dialogue. In an interview with the New York Times, the study’s authors said audiences are aware of a movie’s violence before heading to the theaters and it’s part of the appeal.

One way parents can become more educated about the PG-13 movies their teens want to watch is to read reviews from other parents on sites like Kids-in-Mind.com and CommonSenseMedia.org. These sites break down any questionable content about every movie hitting the theaters, so you can make educated decisions on whether you are OK with your teen watching it or not.

The idea of violence selling is nothing new. But that doesn’t mean you have to let your teen buy it.
