Rockaway rebuilds with beats

New music venues have been bringing DJs and bands to Rockaway Beach and Rockaway Park for a party landscape at the end of the A train.

The last weekend of August in the Rockaways promises dance parties and sangria, arepas and tacos, and beats in support of rebuilding post-Sandy. It has been a banner year for comebacks on the coast, from New Jersey to Breezy Point, and many towns are still hard at it.

The Rockaway Peninsula has bounced back with new, delicious music venues like Playland Motel and Caracas. Playland has been hosting DJs and bringing crowds straight from Brooklyn and the LES on the Rocabus while Caracas has seen a lineup of local bands, DJs and film screenings. Ripley’s Dance-Off this weekend at Caracas includes some of the good folks from turntable collective Dutty Artz playing global bass music, the umbrella for genres like kuduro, soca, electro-cumbia, crunk, bhangra, juke, and dancehall.

DJ Ripley is a NYC selector with a background in jungle and dancehall. To celebrate her birthday she has assembled a team of global bass music disc jockeys, the whole lot aficionados of serious rump shaking. DJ Ushka, M-Peach, DJ Precolumbian, and DJ D’hana are on the bill at Caracas to accompany Venezuelan eats and coconut cocktails as fuel for the dance floor.

Across the stretch of Rockaway beach front, Playland Motel hosts its own fete on this last Saturday of August with an extended disco set from Justin Van Der Volgen. The urban “beach resort”has had a busy summer where artists like Them Jeans and Lemonade’s Alex Pasternack created dance floor havok for city dwellers on the lam. Sunday’s lineup at the Rockaway Park destination includes a full DJ pile up next to the inflateable pool. “St. Tropez to Rockaway” features LES regulars May Kwok and Cougarskin.

Caracas Arepa Bar, Beach 106 Street and Rockaway Boardwalk, 4-10pm
