Smoota plays his horn for the ladies
A gift for you ladies this holiday season, in the form of Smoota.
“My name is Smoota. That’s spelled S and M, double O, T and A.”
Smoota is a trombone player, singer and producer based in New York City, where regular live shows deliver his brand of smoothed-out sexy. Following a record release party at Union Pool celebrating Fetishes, sporting naked caveman album art, Smoota took to the road to strut his one-man show on strip club catwalks nationwide.
Smoota is the creation of musician David Smith who, for the last few years, has been blessing Brooklyn with his horn-based melodies, working female members of the audience into an R&B frenzy. This year found him covering new ground on a strip club tour of the U.S.
Playing sexy lady clubs happened organically for the artist. He says while putting the tour together, he fell into Cheetahs in Hollywood. He expected to do his show like other artists have at the legendary venue, playing on the catwalk while the dancers were on break. Instead, Smoota ended up accompanying the acts. The combination was a winner, and he went on to play adult venues across the land.
Smoota has been on Broadway, playing trombone and keyboards for the musical “Fela!” He has toured with TV on the Radio, Sufjan Stevens and accompanied artists including Miike Snow, Elvis Costello, El-P, Pretty Lights, Deer Tick, MNDR, Pharaoh Monche, Bebel Gilberto, and Angelique Kidjo. While in demand for his trombone, Smoota the artist unleashes a special brand of heat in his live solo act. There is ’70s funk, smoothed out synth and purposeful horn. Lyrics tell brazen tales from the bedroom and rhythm lines are suggestive of vintage porn.
Smoota may look the part of the fourth Bee Gee but his show is an original kind of serenade for singles and couples alike. It is funny business, but also serious business, and Smoota is now involved in lady business nationwide.
