Drenge, band to watch in 2014

Where they’ve been: Brothers Eoin and Rory Loveless are 21 and 20, respectively, from a small village in England called Castleton. Rory describes it as such: “The music scene probably consists of karaoke every fortnight on a Saturday at one pub.” So they obviously had to get out of there.

Where they’re going: With their bombastic and muddy guitar and drum approach they could usher in a grunge revival. Songs on their self-titled debut (with titles like “People in Love Make Me Feel Yuck” and “I Don’t Want to Make Love to You”) capture what a lot of actual grunge acts forgot about, which was that cynicism and irony can actually be funny. As for one of the last one-word band names that is very search engine-friendly, Loveless says it’s a Danish word for boys, but he and his brother just liked the sound of it. “I thought it looked really funny and sounded really disgusting and horrible to listen to,” he says. “We thought it would be a bit like what seeing us live might be because it’s messy, and it’s underage kids, drunk in the corner of the bar and staring at everyone and shouting.” Drenge make their U.S. debut in NYC this weekend. They play the Mercury Lounge on Friday, Jan. 17 and Glasslands in Brooklyn on Saturday, Jan. 18.
