Will the new ASCPA show be as sad as the commercials?

Warning: This show may result in new pets.

As soon as the opening strains of Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You” and a montage of sad, caged puppies comes on TV, most people can’t help but press mute. It’s just that sad. How does this bode for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals getting its own TV series?

While the show, called “Best in Shelter” and hosted by Jill Rappaport, will definitely tug at your heartstrings, this time you won’t have to mute the TV (at least until the commercial break). In the show, Rappaport will travel across the country to visit various shelters, looking for dogs and cats to take part in a pet competition. Besides scoring a sweet ribbon, the hope is that all the competing animals will get adopted in the process.

Unlike the pedigree breeds that typically compete in animal contests, the “Best in Shelter” dogs and cats are largely your average lovable mutts. The furry competitors will come in every shape and size: big, small, full-breed, half-breed. The aim of the show is to raise awareness of the 5 to 7 million animals that enter shelters each year.

The show will begin filming next month, and premiere on Feb. 14, 2015.
