The Word: Philip Seymour Hoffman went to rehab for heroin

Philip Seymour Hoffman just completed 10 days in a detox program for abuse of narcotics and heroin, according to TMZ. Hoffman, star of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and every movie you’ve ever respected, apparently had a drug problem early in his career, but he kicked the habit and had been clean and sober for 23 years — until last year, when he started using again.

Hoffman’s fall off the wagon began with abuse of prescription drugs, but eventually turned into heroin. Hoffman said he’d only been snorting heroin for a week when he realized that things were headed nowhere good, and he entered rehab. He spent 10 days in an East Coast detox facility before checking himself out. He’s now back on a movie set in Europe, and all is reportedly well.

I hope so. It’s somehow much more unsettling to live in a world where Philip Seymour Hoffman has a drug problem than, say, Lindsay Lohan.

Hoffman has a major role in the upcoming “Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire.” A recent teaser trailer prominently features him plotting to destroy Katniss.

In the second installment of the trilogy, not only is Elizabeth Banks back as Effie Trinket and her crazy costumes, hair and makeup, but we’ll also get to see Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee.
