The Word: Penelope Cruz is the next Bond girl

The good: When she was nominated in 2007 for Best Actress for “Volver,” Penelope Cruz’s choice of this Atelier Versace gown (complete with a feathered train) proved she was ready to enter Hollywood’s A-list. Credit: Getty Images

Bond woman. Bond lady. Bond feminist icon. OK, maybe not.

Penelope Cruz is set to join the ranks of 007′s lady friends in Sam Mendes’ next installment of the secret agent franchise, according to Yahoo. At 40, she’ll be the oldest Bond “girl” ever, and one of his only age-appropriate companions. The previous record holder was Honor Blackman, who was 39 when she played Pussy Galore in “Goldfinger” in 1962.

“The producers have tried to get Penelope before, but she has never been available because of other commitments. The discussions have been going on for some time and they are working out the contract details now,” a source said.

Penelope isn’t Bond-ready at the moment: She’s pregnant, expecting her second child with husband Javier Bardem any day now. They’re already the parents of a 2-year-old son, Leo.

Mr. Bond himself, Daniel Craig, seems a bit tired of the physical demands of the role. “I had to do a lot of running in this movie, which I hate,” Craig told Metro. “I end up doing a day’s filming which on paper should look fairly easy. I don’t have any dialogue. It says, ‘Bond goes from to A to B, then he goes from B to C.’ But he goes from A to B at a lick, he runs down the stairs, he runs up the stairs, and we have to do 10 takes at a time, so by the end of it I’m just [gasping].

“Bond,” he summarizes, “doesn’t usually walk through a room.”
