Get more for elaborately constructed community-college-based pop culture parodies. Well, those never went away, but get ready for some really good ones. Original showrunner Dan Harmon is back on “Community.”

Sony and Harmon announced yesterday that Harmon will be back as executive producer for “Community”‘s fifth season, according to the New York Times. Harmon created “Community,” and led it on its distinctively complex parodies of action films, horror movies, and even “My Dinner With Andre,” which won it a passionate fanbase. However, viewership remained small, and Harmon’s perfectionism, difficulty meeting deadlines, and public feuding with “Community” star Chevy Chase eventually led Sony to fire Harmon before the fourth season.

Harmon himself claimed he was back several days before the studio confirmed it, tweeting, “Yes yes yes! I’m back I’m back I’m back.”

Harmon first broke the news of his return on his podcast in May. Harmon initially said he’d edit the news of his potential return out of the podcast and asked his live audience to keep it under their hats, but then decided, “Ahhh f**k it. I don’t care who knows!”

This season saw largely low Nielsen numbers for “Community,” whose current season is its first without jettisoned creator/show runner Harmon. (Chevy Chase has also departed, but he quit after shooting most of his episodes for the season.) Even the cult show’s champions have been skeptical of its ability to maintain quality control, and the discouraging numbers suggest there’s a chance it may not make it out of the season alive.
