The Word: Jane Curtin made Melissa McCarthy cry
Melissa McCarthy, star of “Bridesmaids,” upcoming comedy “The Heat,” and your heart, is on top of the world, but meeting her comedy idols still reduces her to a blubbering mess.
While filming “The Heat,” a buddy-cop comedy costarring Sandra Bullock, McCarthy got to work with Jane Curtin, who played her mother. Curtin has been one of McCarthy’s idols since she first watched her on “Saturday Night Live,” and realized that the women were as funny as the men. “They’re the ones making it. They’re not just saying funny things — they’re actually funny,” she told the New York Times.
However, when she tried to convey this to Curtin on their last day of shooting, she just ended up crying hysterically – and then Curtin reminded her that they actually had one more day to go.
“She was really nice about it,” Ms. McCarthy said. “But I was like, I can’t get out cool. I can’t do it.”
McCarthy’s “Heat” costar Sandra Bullock is in talks to star in “Annie” as orphanage manager Miss Hannagan. The upcoming film adaptation stars “Beasts of the Southern Wild” actress Quvenzhane Wallis as Annie and Jamie Foxx as Benjamin Stacks, a new character who replaces Daddy Warbucks.
