The Word: Nigella Lawson’s husband choked her in public
TV chef Nigella Lawson’s husband attacked her in broad daylight at a London restaurant, according to the Mirror. The UK newspaper has photos of Nigella’s husband, advertising executive Charles Saatchi, locking his hands around her neck several times and apparently choking her as she appears to try to pull his hands away. Lawson later left the restaurant in tears.
Although the incident went on for several minutes in clear view of the street and their fellow diners, onlookers were apparently too shocked to intervene. Bystanders said that Lawson appeared to be trying to soothe her husband, laying her hand on top of his and at one point kissing him on the cheek.
“Nigella was very, very upset. She had a real look of fear on her face. No man should do that to a woman. She raised her voice and got angry but at the same time was trying to calm him down, almost like you would try to calm down a child,” one witness said.
Saatchi, 70, and Lawson, 53, have been married for 10 years. It is his third marriage and her second. They share a London converted warehouse with their three teenage children from previous marriages.
