The Word: Emma Watson only has eight pairs of shoes

Emma Watson currently stars in “The Bling Ring,” a horrified/fascinated look at the excess of celebrity culture. Emma herself seems to land more on the “horrified” end of the spectrum.

Emma was overwhelmed by how overstuffed Paris Hilton’s real wardrobe was when she shot scenes at the socialite’s home, she told the Radio Times (via the Telegraph). “She could never wear all of those clothes and half of them were brand new and still had the price tag on. But I suppose she just bought them to have them. We’ve all bought things on impulse but that’s an entirely different thing.”

She added: “It’s almost like consumerism as a form of kleptomania.”

Goodness! See if Paris ever invites you over again, Emma.

Emma apparently doesn’t need nearly so much closet real estate herself. “I’ve got about eight pairs of shoes and that’s it,” she claimed. “But it’s easy for me to sound like a total hypocrite because, of course, I’m dressed in designer clothes right now.”

Only eight pairs of shoes? I need at least five to deal with a week’s worth of NYC weather.

Perhaps lifting a page from her Cannes-screened buzzy new film, in which Emma and her pals rip off Hollywood stars, a real thief broke into a Cannes hotel room and stole more than $1 million worth of Chopard jewelry, according to Deadline. Chopard is one of Cannes’ sponsors and the designer of the Palme d’Or prize, and the jewels were to be loaned to visiting stars when they walked the red carpet.

The thieves somehow gained entry to the hotel room, which belonged to a Chopard employee, ripped the safe out of the wall, and absconded with it. I can’t wait to see that scene in “The Bling Ring II: French Connection.”
