The Word: Jennifer Lopez is sorry she sang to a dictator

Jennifer Lopez has apologized for  singing “Happy Birthday” to Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, the leader of Turkmenistan, this weekend. She says she never would have done it if she’d known how repressive his regime is. “Had there been knowledge of human rights issues any kind, Jennifer would not have attended,” her rep told People.

Apparently, the event was vetted by Jennifer’s staff, who somehow failed to note that Turkmenistan is considered one of the most brutal regimes in the world. Oof. Next time, Wikipedia, guys.

One big question remains unanswered: What will JLo do with the money? Presumably, she didn’t agree to the event because she and ol’ Gurbanguly are high school pals or anything – usually stars get ensnared in this sort of scandal because the dictator in question offered them an outrageously large sum of money. No word on how much Jennifer might have profited, or whether she’ll assuage her guilt by donating it to charity.

JLo is probably feeling nostalgic for a simpler time, when her scandals were just about how skimpy her clothing is. She appeared last month on “Britain’s Got Talent,” where she performed her new single. It wasn’t her music, however, that people were talking about. The singer appeared in a sort of leather thong leotard that left most of her ample assets in full view — especially when she knelt down toward the camera, crotch-first. And some of the English public aren’t happy with the display — Ofcom, the English FCC, says it’s received complaints about her performance, according to the Daily Mail.
