The Word: ‘Doctor Who’ star John Barrowman weds post-DOMA
Unlike the state of California, John Barrowman wasted no time.
Barrowman, star of “Doctor Who” and “Torchwood,” married Scott Gill, his partner of twenty years, following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8 last week.
In a video posted before the ceremony, the couple are in the car on their way to tie the knot, looking exhausted but happy. “Thank you, Supreme Court, about time you made it legal,” Barrowman says. “See you after the ceremony!”
The newlyweds posted a photo of themselves holding their wedding certificate on WhoSay. “We are now Legally Married. Thanks for all your great wishes. Jb and Scott,” they said.
Aww! Brings a tear to my eye. Congrats, guys! And congrats to the Supreme Court. Clearly the bench must be filled with “Doctor Who” fans.
Just when it seemed like his lanky form might be flopping around the TARDIS forever, Matt Smith has announced that he’s leaving “Doctor Who.” He’ll stick around for the 50th anniversary special in November, as well as the Christmas special, but then he’s out.
So who will play the 12th doctor after the Bowtied One makes his exit? No one’s been cast yet — but note the vagueness of pronouns in showrunner Steven Moffat’s statement: “Of course, this isn’t the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now — all unknowing, just going about their business — is someone who’s about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that’s still so exciting!”
Could Moffat be considering casting a woman in the iconic role of the Doctor? That really would be exciting.
