The Word: Beyonce takes a moment of silence for Trayvon Martin

Beyonce asked for a moment of silence for slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin at her concert Saturday night.

“I’d like to have a moment of silence for Trayvon,” the singer said at the beginning of her concert in Nashville, which began less than an hour after Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted. The lights were then dimmed, and Beyonce sang the chorus of “I Will Always Love You,” followed by “Halo,” according to Us Weekly.

Bey wasn’t the only celebrity who reacted with shock and sadness to the verdict. “A child was gunned down for no reason! And nothing about that sounds like murder? My baby brother is 17, this rocked my whole s***! #thesystemisandhasalwaysbeenph***ed” Rihanna said on Instagram, along with a photo of Trayvon.

“No. My heart is with Sybrina Fulton, Rachel Jeantel, everyone who loved Trayvon and has been sent the message that his life didn’t matter,” Lena Dunham tweeted.

Following protests in Harlem and Union Square, hundreds of demonstrators against the verdict in the Trayvon Martin trial marched into Times Square Sunday night, blocking traffic and intermingling with tourists for nearly an hour.

Before 7 p.m., Union Square became overrun with New Yorkers protesting the “not guilty” verdict in the trial against George Zimmerman, accused of shooting an unarmed teen in Florida. The marchers took to the streets, as seen in this Associated Press video.
