The Word: Prince Harry promises to make sure Prince George has fun

While Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, settle into their lives as parents to newborn Prince George, William’s brother Prince Harry is already comfortable in his role of fun uncle.

Harry attended a viewing party for the exhibit “Sentable: Stories of Hope” at the Getty Images Gallery last night, where he spoke about his baby nephew for the first time. The prince, who’s been bumped from third to fourth in line for the throne by his nephew’s birth, says his avuncular duties are to “make sure he has a good upbringing, to keep him out of harm’s way and make sure he has fun. The rest of it I leave to the parents.”

Somewhere in England, I imagine Kate Middleton is making very careful plans to shield her son from her brother-in-law’s idea of fun. Then again, maybe it’s better if they hang out now. If a naked baby gets photographed snuggling a bunch of pretty girls, it’s not nearly as big of a deal as it was when Harry did it in Vegas.

The Firm, as Britain’s royal family calls itself, has a new asset — the royal baby.

With the world media in a frenzy over the birth of Prince William and his wife Kate’s son, companies from airlines to champagne-makers have jumped on the chance to cash in on the wave of popularity sweeping over the royal family.

From royal potties to blue-cream-filled doughnuts to commemorative plates, the range of merchandise celebrating the birth of the prince ranges from the obvious to the bizarre.
