The Word: James Blunt emails new single to everyone in England

Oh, email. It’s the worst when you accidentally send something to the wrong person. Like, you meant to email your friend Beth from high school, but instead you emailed several million citizens of the United Kingdom.

That’s what happened to James Blunt yesterday (well, the part about my friend Beth from high school is unconfirmed). According to E! Online, the singer sent out an email to promote his new single to several million people in the U.K.

Blunt’s team claims the massive spam was an accident, but didn’t say who the email’s intended recipients were, nor how they had millions of email addresses in the first place. Here’s an excerpt: “So … Just for you … Here’s the first single from my new album…!” That sounds personal as only a marketing mailing can.

Blunt is a member of another rarefied musical club: those who refuse to allow Weird Al Yankovic to parody their music.

Over the years, Yankovic had misunderstandings with Coolio and was consistently turned down by Prince. He was most recently rejected by James Blunt. Yankovic also received some initial resistance from Lady Gaga’s camp.

But after posting a video of “Perform This Way,” Gaga approved its inclusion on Yankovic’s new release. “She told Rolling Stone that she loved it and thought it was an empowering song and a rite of passage,” says Yankovic, who donated all proceeds from the song and video to Human Rights Campaign.
