The Word: Mumford & Sons parody pokes fun at earnest rockers

I couldn’t figure out why everyone was sharing this video this morning. “Big whoop, Mumford & Sons playing banjos in a field,” I said to myself, scrolling past it. “Besides, ‘Hopeless Wanderer’ isn’t even that new.”

Oh how young and foolish I was. If only I knew then what I know now: Yes, it’s “Hopeless Wanderer.” Yes, it’s four guys in suspenders playing in a field. But they’re not Mumford & Sons.

Yep, that’s Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman, Ed Helms and Will Forte doing their best Mumford & Sons impressions. The folk band isn’t the first to round up hip comedians for their video, but somehow when it’s the uber-earnest Mumford & Sons mocking their own image, it’s a bunch funnier. Maybe because I wasn’t sure they knew they had one. I would not be surprised to learn that Mumford & Sons have never used electricity.

After undergoing surgery earlier this summer, Mumford & Sons bassist Ted Kwane is going to be fine, the band reported on their Facebook page.

“It is with great joy that we can announce that Ted has been discharged from hospital and is on the road to a full recovery,” they wrote. “The surgery went well, and the excellent medical team helping him are very pleased with his progress. He has been nothing short of heroic in how he has handled the whole ordeal, and now it has been medically proved that he does indeed have a brain.”
