The Word: Desiree’s choice on ‘Bachelorette’ finale

THE BACHELORETTE - It's time for Desiree Hartsock to call the shots when she gets her second chance to find love, starring in the ninth edition of ABC’s hit romance reality series, “The Bachelorette,” which will premiere MONDAY, MAY 27 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. Last week, on the penultimate episode of this season’s “The Bachelorette,” one of Desiree Hartstock’s three suitors, Brooks Forester, made a shocking decision to leave the show. Her choice would have been clear — she wept and begged him to stay, even telling him she loved him. But Brooks held firm, and disappeared to whence he came, which is presumably a 1970s soap opera judging by his name.

So what was Desiree to do on last night’s finale? Wait for Brooks to make a surprise return? Choose one of the two remaining dudes? Have a “Desiree chooses Desiree” moment?

In the end, she did get engaged to final suitor Chris Siegfried. After sending Drew Kenney home early, citing a lack of chemistry, she came clean to Chris about her breakdown over Brooks, and the two got engaged. Good work, Desiree. If you can find a guy who’s cool to marry you when you were in love with someone else the week before, you’ve got to nail that down.

As messy as Desiree’s last few episodes were, at least all the awkwardness had the ring of truth. Some previous contestants may not have been as honest: Rumor had it that Emily Maynard and Jef Holm faked their engagement.

Apparently, Holm’s former girlfriend and current hook-up buddy (whom he was dating when he went on “The Bachelorette”) went into tell-all mode to Us Weekly. The ex, Kaylee Shepherd, says that Holm revealed to her that he and Maynard are faking it. In August, a “texting scandal” hit — Maynard was caught sexting another man, which Us Weekly, the Woodward and Bernstein of tabloids, uncovered.

Maynard, desperate to preserve her good girl image, hatched a plan to pay off Holm with half of her “Bachelorette” money. “Jef said their relationship isn’t what it seems. It’s all basically for TV,” Shepherd tells Us.
