The Word: Jennifer Lawrence was a middle school weirdo

Jennifer Lawrence wasn't a typical teenager, either.
Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t a typical teenager, either.

Jennifer Lawrence is beautiful, talented and charismatic, but more than anything, she has nailed down-to-earthness like no other actress before her. But people haven’t always found her quirky sense of humor charming. When she was growing up in Kentucky, they just thought she was straight-up strange.

“I was a weirdo,” Lawrence told Vogue. “I wasn’t picked on or anything. And I wasn’t smarter than the other kids; that’s not why I didn’t fit in. I’ve always just had this weird anxiety. I hated recess. I didn’t like field trips. Parties really stressed me out.”

That might have been because she committed hard to a sense of humor that was radically different than other Kentucky kids’ — possibly different than any other human being’s. Things she thought would be hilarious included jumping out of  a moving schoolbus, telling the whole class she wet the bed and running from one end of the gym to the other at top speed to distract from a bad haircut. “I just started sprinting from one end of the gym to the other, and I thought it was hilarious. But nobody else at that age really did. It was genuinely weird.”

It’s great to hear this stuff. Lawrence has become insanely perfect and charming of late, and hearing that she used to basically be my hyperactive little cousin makes me like her a lot more — dammit, she’s being charming again. Lawrence!
