The Word: Why is a J.Crew exec guest starring on ‘Breaking Bad’?

File this one under “Huh, OK.”

J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler will have a small cameo on this Sunday’s episode of “Breaking Bad.” Look for him as a customer in Walter White’s car wash.

So how did this synergy between the decidedly unglamorous “Breaking Bad” and preppy mother ship J.Crew come about? Apparently, Drexler had a meeting with some Sony Television producers, and when they learned that he was obsessed with the show, they insisted that he make an appearance.

There’s something odd about this story. Even if the Sony execs had a burning desire to get on Drexler’s good side, why would anyone want “Breaking Bad” and “J.Crew” to appear in the same sentence? That doesn’t seem good for anyone’s brand. Picture Walter White in a chic pair of tapered red capris and a silk ruffle top. It just doesn’t work.

“Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan had to stand firm in his decision to end the show after five seasons. “I had some very, very polite discussions. I never had any arguments, but I had Bryan Cranston say, ‘Are you sure you want to end it?’ I had Sony and AMC say, ‘Are you sure you want to end it?’ And it all came from a place of enthusiasm for the show and a desire for it to continue, and I have those same feelings of enthusiasm and desire,” Gilligan admits. “I wanted the show to go on forever for reasons of creative satisfaction and personal satisfaction. But it wasn’t that hard of a decision to end it. I wanted it to end on a high note and not go past its expiration date, if you will.”
