The Word: Alleged ‘American Idol’ contract lets them lie about stars

Comedia Chris Cox claims that this clause is from the contract signed by "American Idol" contestants.
Comedia Chris Cox claims that this clause is from the contract signed by “American Idol” contestants.

Is this real?

I hope not.

English comedian Chris Cox tweeted “WOW! Look at this contract clause for American Idol. Basically saying we can make stuff up about you,” along with the above screenshot of a contract, which includes phrases like “I understand that I may reveal, and other parties may reveal, information about me that is of a personal, private, embarrassing and/or unfavorable nature, which information may be factual and/or fictional.”

I don’t think anyone, even a very popular singing television show, can “reveal” fictional information about someone. That’s just called lying. Of course, this whole thing may be fake — Cox is vague about its provenance, just says he “got sent it.” It also reserves rights “throughout the universe in perpetuity,” which sounds more like something out of “Doctor Who” than “American Idol.”

It’s rough out there for “Idol” alums. Justin Guarini briefly won America’s hearts with his floppy blond afro and his pretty voice in that very first season of “American Idol.” He lost out to Kelly Clarkson, who went on to become one of the few bona fide pop stars that “Idol” has produced. Guarini’s path has been rockier: He was dropped by his label after just a year, and he’s struggled to gain a foothold ever since.

In a raw post on his blog, Guarini reflects on how much his life has changed since his dizzying days of fame.

“There was a time when I wouldn’t have been concerned about the amazing expense of eating at place like Green Symphony,” he writes.

“Now, I budget. I have spent days skipping meals in order to make sure I have enough. To make sure my children, and my wife have enough.”
