The Word: Shailene Woodley bashes ‘Secret Life of the American Teenager’

Shailene Woodley didn't hold with the moral message of her show toward the end of her stint.
Shailene Woodley didn’t hold with the moral message of her show toward the end of her stint.

Of all the Next Big Things out there, Shailene Woodley is the very Next Big Thingiest. She’s cornered the market hard on adaptations of YA novels, including “The Spectacular Now,” “Divergent,” and “The Fault in Our Stars.”

Having such a zeitgeisty career seems to have freed her from being That Girl From The Republican “Knocked Up,” which is how I thought of her before. And boy, is she relieved to leave “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” behind.

“I’m extremely grateful for it; it was a fantastic five years of my life, but towards the end, morally, the things that we were preaching on that show weren’t really aligned with my own integrity. So that was a bit hard, to show up to work every day knowing that we were going to project all of these themes to thousands—millions—of young adults across the country, when in fact they weren’t what I would like to be sending out,” she told Flaunt magazine.

It must have been frustrating to appear on such a show, since Woodley seems to be a big ol’ hippie. She also told Flaunt that she’s a huge fan of natural foods and beauty products, even making her own toothpaste. Out of what, I wonder? I really did not know that was a thing you could make from scratch. Is there a fluoride bush or something?
