The Word: WikiLeaks leaks script for Julian Assange film ‘The Fifth Estate’
WikiLeaks has obtained and posted online what it claims is a “mature version” of the script for “The Fifth Estate,” the upcoming film about WikiLeaks starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange.A list of disputes that the WikiLeaks folks have with the film include everything from the level of harm to U.S. agents to the fact that the movie implies that Julian Assange bleaches his hair.
So what did WikiLeaks hope to accomplish by leaking the script? Some have speculated that the move was intended to discredit the movie and harm ticket sales. If so, WikiLeaks doesn’t understand as much about marketing as it does about leaking things. I can’t imagine better viral marketing for a movie about leaks than getting leaked. I mean, I am currently writing about it, and it doesn’t have any spaceships or dance numbers. You’re going to leak them to #1, WikiLeaks.
“Fifth Estate” costar Daniel Bruhl spoke to Metro recently about his role, and about the bigger debate around hacker leaks.
“It’s a subject, I think, that will be important for a long time, and we’re just at the beginning of it,” he says. “All of us, we citizens, have learn a lot of things — how we deal with gathering information — but also governments have to learn how to deal with it, and corporations. I think we’re drowning right now in information. This is a problem for everyone. It is exaggerated and it’s wrong. I don’t know how to channel that or how to filter that, but that has to happen, because otherwise we will have huge conflicts in the future.”
