The Word: Watch Beyonce dance the Haka in New Zealand
Beyonce did a show in New Zealand on Oct 19, and after the concert her local crew welcomed her with a traditional dance. The Haka, which the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team also performs before every match, is a tongue-waggling, thigh-slapping, bicep-flaunting Maori dance used to intimidate opponents and honor visitors.
Beyonce was presumably the latter – an honored visitor – but she got a bit competitive anyway. You can’t dance with Beyonce and expect her not to dance right back at you, so it’s no surprise that she Haka’d with the best of them. OK, she’s a petite beauty in a spangly jumpsuit instead of a muscle-bound roadie, but still, pretty scary. Check out the video below.
Beyonce has shown a knack for fitting in with the locals on this tour: When she played at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, she rode her bike over the Brooklyn Bridge and even hung out at a low-key Prospect Heights bar with Jay Z after one of her shows. That’s right: Even Beyonce loves bikes and picklebacks. Brooklyn runs the world.
