The Word: Allison Williams wasn’t the first choice for ‘Girls’ role

Allison Williams shot to stardom (well, starlet-dom) as Hannah’s best friend, the pretty, indecisive Marnie, on “Girls.” But she wasn’t the show’s first choice: “Girls” producers initially hoped to cast Lena Dunham’s real best friend, Audrey Gelman.

Gelman has a real person job as spokeswoman for NYC comptroller candidate Scott Stringer, and she resisted the glittery allure of showbiz to continue her career in city politics, which I’m sure is equally glamorous.

Don’t worry, the news that she was a second choice isn’t a shock to Allison: She and Gelman revealed it at a Marie Claire luncheon they were both attending. Glad they’re friends now, but what if Stringer loses and Gelman wants that acting job after all? Or what if “Girls” gets canceled and Allison Williams decides she’d really like to work for the comptroller?

Dunham is currently participating in an art project where she occasionally reveals her emails — including one about her dog’s urine-drinking addiction. “My dog, Lamby, is a rescue (age not clear) who is wonderful and sweet but has some bad anxiety issues that lead him to burrow, chew and drink his own urine,” she wrote in an email to someone named Tracy, presumably a dog trainer. “I thought perhaps his constant urinating (and drinking of that urine) was UTI based, but the vet checked him out and he was fine in that department — she suggested Prozac.”
