When is BBC’s ‘Sherlock’ coming back? Now we know

It was, perhaps, the greatest mystery of our time: When would the BBC’s “Sherlock” return to the airwaves?

The addictive show has always been maddeningly casual about continuing its saga. You’d think given that each season is only three episodes long, stars Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch and showrunner Steven Moffat would be able to fit it into their busy schedules. However, that has not proven to be the case. Three years elapsed between the first two seasons, and though production began on the third way back in March, no release date was announced.

The delay was particularly torturous because of the way Series Two (ooh, look how British I get when I talk about “Sherlock,” calling seasons “series”) ended: with Sherlock Holmes’ apparent suicide. How will the show get out of that one? We’ve been waiting since 2012 for the answer, and on Jan. 1, 2014, we’ll find out.

The BBC made the long overdue announcement with some flair, at least: The above hearse, bearing flowers reading “Sherlock 01/01/2014,” was spotted driving around London this week, and the BBC later confirmed a New Year’s Day return date – in England, at least. Over in the States, it won’t air until Jan. 19. I guess “Also 1/19/2014 in America” wouldn’t fit on the hearse.
