Hot Plate: Hai Street’s sushi burrito

You can have your sushi and eat a burrito, too.

Deciding where I’m going to eat lunch is probably the most fun decision I’ll make during any given workday. It comes with a catch, however. While getting adventurous sounds like a great idea, suffering a food coma in the middle of the afternoon push is not ideal. When I heard that Hai Street Kitchen opened a location at Liberty Place a few weeks ago, I was intrigued and decided it was about time to give the famed sushi burrito a whirl. But would it live up to the hype?

Sure, it combines two of the most delicious culinary inventions in the world — sushi and burritos — but it could either be lip-smacking delicious or tummy-clenching disgusting.

I decided to dive right in with the Slammin’ Salmon, which features tataki-style salmon, spicy gochujang sauce, romaine, fresh cucumber, pickled jicama and red cabbage rolled inside a shell of white rice and seaweed nori.

The verdict? Fresh, light, flavorful and satiating. The tanginess of the gochujang sauce combined with the juicy crunch of the pickled jicama simply shouts summer. What’s more, they don’t skimp on the salmon so you can rest assured your sushi burrito will pack a powerful protein punch. I think I’ve finally found a healthy lunch alternative that’s not a salad! Thanks, Hai Street. I’d give you two thumbs up if I wasn’t so busy eating. Looks like my big decision tomorrow will be which sushi burrito to try next.​
