After four years in Phoenixville, Hipster Home just relocated to Germantown Avenue in the Chestnut Hill section of the city. The new store, according to Dave Friday — who owns it with his longtime girlfriend Lindsay Herman — offers “classic contemporary pieces” that are “design forward, but still functional” and “not down the trendy path.”

Actually, that doesn’t sound hipster at all.

“The name is definitely tongue-in-cheek,” Friday explains. “It’s just our sense of humor. Not everyone gets it.” A similar sensibility went into the naming of Kung Fu Necktie, a bar in Fishtown co-owned by Herman’s brother, he adds.

Hipster Home carries furniture, kitchenware, bath products, sound systems, decorative pieces and a bunch of funky odds and ends. Most of the inventory can also be found online at www.hipsterhome.com, along with a selection of sofas and other big items that don’t fit into the store.

Five fave items

1 “Our Umbra wine rack is bright, colorful, functional, a space saver and priced right,” says Friday. Umbra Grapevine wine rack, $20

2 “Our Gus Modern sectional is called a ‘bi-sectional’ because it flips from right side to left side just by moving the cushions around.” Gus Modern Jane Bi-Sectional, $2,999

3 “Another Gus Modern piece, called the Upcycle Ottoman. They are such cool pieces and the fact that they took an inexpensive burlap bag and turned it into a piece of furniture/art is incredible.” Gus Modern Upcycle Ottoman, $395

4 “The ‘Psycho’ shower curtain is fun and functional and adds a pop of color and whimsy to an otherwise boring room.” Kikkerland Design shower curtain, $18

5 “These tiny little speakers give your iPod some noticeable sound.” Mini-iStereo-Dock iPod-Compatible Docking Connector, $20
