Can’t make the club in the tub

Maurice Jones-Drew could be the next elite running back to find his career cliff. He had knee surgery this offseason.

NFL coaches hate players that are always hurt. When you are in the training room, you can’t get better, can’t get faster and can’t be trusted.

Fantasy owners should have the same feelings toward injured guys. Older players off major injuries should be a red flag. Here are three big-name guys not worth gambling on:

MJD’s knee

Maurice Jones-Drew had meniscus surgery this offseason after doctors diagnosed him with a “bone on bone” condition. Now he’s limited in camp, is coming off two straight seasons of 330-plus touches and is on an offense where he’s the only real weapon. The risk is too great for the first round.

Cold Colston

Marques Colston underwent microfracture surgery this offseason, the fifth knee surgery of his career. He recently sat out five straight days at Saints camp due to soreness, and it’s questionable if he’ll be able to regain his athleticism. Robert Meachem is ready to step in if Colston can’t do it.

Shaky Gates

Antonio Gates is as tough as they come and the best tight end in the league. He is also still feeling the plantar fasciitis that bothered him last year. No one seems concerned, but the tight end position is so deep. Give me Jason Witten, Jermichael Finley or Vernon Davis a couple rounds later. Gambling on Gates isn’t worth it.
