DJ Chelsea Leyland: Fashion Week’s playlist

Read more about DJ Chelsea, who mans the turntables for Dove’s Go Fresh Fresh Spin series, at www.dove.mtv.com.

DJ Chelsea Leyland is no stranger to Fashion Week — she’s DJ’ed the Naeem Khan Spring/Summer 2012 show, two Fashion’s Night Out events and a bunch of parties in between. We got her top picks for a rockin’ good time.

What are the songs you’ve been hearing at Fashion Week?

I’ve been hearing “A Strangers Heart” by Theophilus London, “Otis” by Jay Z & Kanye, “Need You Tonight” by INXS and “Bright Lights” by Garry Clark Jr., which I’ve actually been hearing live as he’s played a bunch in New York.

How far in advance did you make your Fashion Week playlists?

I started working on the music for the Naeem Khan show a month in advance—everything else I thought about much closer to the time. Each event has been totally different. The only thing in common was that they were all fashion-based.

What are your top three picks for the ultimate party playlist?

“Dancing With Myself” – Billy Idol
“I’m a Man” – Black Strobe
“Rolling In the Deep” – Jamie xx remix of Adele

How would you guide someone in creating their own playlist for a birthday party, dinner, etc.?
Try to figure out what kind of vibe you want to create for the occasion and roll with that. It also helps to keep in mind who will be there and what you think they might want to hear.
