Penn St. campus rocked by sex scandal, coverup

Penn State’s football program enjoyed a bye this past weekend.

For administrators, however, the weekend was anything but peaceful.

On Saturday, allegations that a former coach sexually abused eight boys rocked Happy Valley. Retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was arrested and released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts. He has since been banned from campus.

But the plot thickened.

Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and administrator Gary Schultz are accused of perjury for failing to report Sandusky’s transgressions. The two reportedly saw Sandusky assault a boy in a shower at the team’s practice facility and didn’t report it. The two men claim they are innocent, while the university said it will cover their legal fees.

Longtime head coach Joe Paterno, who has the most wins in Division I football history, isn’t being charged with any crimes or accused of any wrongdoing. Sandusky was once considered a candidate to replace Paterno, if the coach were to step down.

“This is a case about a sexual predator who used his position within the university and community to repeatedly prey on young boys,” state Attorney General Linda Kelly said.

Twelfth-ranked Penn State (8-1) hosts No. 19 Nebraska this weekend in Happy Valley.
