Flyers Notebook: Winter Classic, 0-0 after one
The Orange and Black honored their past heroes one more time, with a video tribute after the first period. The team introduced some its great players over the past few decades and allowed former stars, including Joe Watson, Eric Lindros, Jeremy Roenick, Ron Hextall, to get ovations from the packed house at Citizens Bank Park.
The tribute ended with a nearly10-minute montage to the Stanley Cup champion Broad Street Bullies, capped with the Lauren Hart/Kate Smith rendition of “God Bless America.”
As for the play on the ice, a very slow first period of action. Claude Giroux had a breakaway chance but didn’t even get a shot off as Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist ate it up. The Flyers lead in shots on goal after one, 12-9. The score remains 0-0.
Game time temperature was 41.1 degrees officially. Ice seems to be holding up so far.
