Union, Chester ‘very excited’ to host All-Star game

PPL Park will be rocking when the best players in MLS descend upon Chester for the All-Star Game on July 25.

On a Tuesday morning, in the middle of an average work week, more than 75 members of the Sons of Ben made the trek to City Hall.

They wanted to appear in person to officially hear the news that the Philadelphia Union and PPL Park were going to host the 2012 MLS All-Star Game.

They even performed a “DOOP” chant at the request of Mayor Michael Nutter.

This type of passion is one of the main reasons this annual event is coming to the Chester waterfront on July 25. The game will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.

“I think, and I’ve said this from day one, we have the greatest fans in the league,” said Union CEO Nick Sakiewicz. “They were there years before the franchise was even awarded. So, for that commitment, this is their reward. I’m never surprised to see the Sons of Ben at these events. It’s part of why we’re here today.”

Sakiewicz appeared at a news conference yesterday with MLS Commissioner Don Garber, Nutter and Chester Mayor John Linder.

The opponent has not been announced, but Garber is hopeful that decision will be made in the next couple of months.

“Nothing is set in stone, and we hope to have something soon,” Garber said.

Last year’s game at Red Bull Arena featured the MLS All-Stars against Manchester United.

Manchester United won 4-0. This time, the winner is already the Union.

“The Philadelphia Union have quickly enhanced Philly’s sports traditions with the most dedicated MLS fan base in the nation,” Nutter said. “I have no doubt there will be a fantastic turnout for this year’s festivities.”
