Teabagger lawyers: Back off New Orleans!

First off, all credit to Deadspin for breaking this story and following up on it.

A few weeks ago, following Alabama’s win over LSU in the BCS championship, Brian Downing placed his testicles on the neck of a passed out LSU fan at a New Orleans burger joint. We’ll spare you the rest of the details, no doubt you’ve either read about it or saw the video.

While most people I have talked to side with Mr. Downing, he was charged with sexual assault and forced to hire lawyers to represent him. On Thursday, those lawyers released a statement on the ordeal, in which they basically told the New Orleans police department to get a life.

The statement (via Gawker/Deadspin) reads, “While there has been an incredible amount of attention and publicity surrounding Mr. Downing’s case, it boggles the mind that with the New Orleans murder rate disturbingly high, the New Orleans Police Department and the District Attorney’s office would devote substantial energy and attention to this matter. To charge Mr. Downing with sexual battery demeans the real and serious trauma of actual victims of sexual violence.”

The lawyers are spitting truth here, too.

A recent New York Times article claimed that New Orleans had already calculated 175 homicides for the year, or 10 times the national average. That’s about 51 homicides per 100,000 people, according to the article. New York City has about 7 per 100,000. New Orleans closed 2011 with 197 homicides. (Nice try NOLA, but still a far cry from Philadelphia’s 324 murders, which was tops in the country).

Anyway, this quote from New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu sums it up best.

“From September of last year to February of this year,” said Landrieu, via the NY Times, in a recent speech, after reciting a litany of killings from one city high school, “a student attending John McDonogh was more likely to be killed than a soldier in Afghanistan.”

Go forward, NOLA, and prosecute those teabaggers! WHO DAT?! WHO DAT?!
