Temple’s Big East fate looms

The rumors have been circulating for years, but just recently gained steam when the New York Times reported that the Big East and Temple are close to finalizing an agreement.

As schools continue to abandon the Big East for larger, more lucrative conferences, the Big East is now stuck with just seven football teams for 2012. The conference is reportedly close to offering Temple, a school it kicked out in 2004 for a lack of support, an invitation back in.

Temple’s board of trustees is scheduled to meet via conference call Wednesday to discuss the matter. The Owls are members of the Mid-American Conference for football, and the Atlantic 10 for all other sports.

“This is driven by the 2012 football schedule,” Patrick J. O’Connor,
chairman of Temple’s board of trustees, told CSNPhilly.com. “Because of that, decisions have to be
made. There are time considerations.”
