Playing the Field: The newest NFL trend – shave a penis onto your teammate’s head

Rookie hazing has long been a tradition at NFL camps across the country. But due to dozens and dozens of scary incidents in the pros and at lower levels over the years, this practice has rightfully been scaled back a bit.

Thankfully, it seems as though today’s professionals know where to draw the line with this stuff. For instance instead of whacking teammates with bags of coins, which actually occurred at Saints camp in 1998, you often see players singing their alma maters in front of the team, getting buckets of ice water poured on their head and, of course, getting their heads shaved by teammates.

Veteran players have had to get a little creative these past few years while straddling the line of “too far” and “too lame.” File this one under the code of: Just Right.

Yup, the trend in the NFL this August is to shave the shape of a penis into rookie’s heads.

No one gets physically hurt (though 300-pound men in girdles wielding electric razors has long been a nightmare of many of us) and any emotional pain should go away after a few days (when your hair grows back).

We first saw it on HBO’s Hard Knocks Tuesday night, as Dolphins rookie Josh Samuda got an entire package neatly trimmed onto his cranium. Today, Busted Coverage revealed the photo above of Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer doing the honors for some poor Oakland newbie.

Good god it’s ugly in the Red Sox dugout

Yahoo! Sports broke a story yesterday regarding the Red Sox franchise being in complete and total chaos.

For most in Boston, it wasn’t exactly a new theme.

It didn’t surprise anyone that Dustin Pedroia was seen in a mocking cell phone picture with his tongue out and thumbs up, hovering over manager Bobby Valentine, who was taking a nap in the clubhouse. It didn’t surprise anyone that Adrian Gonzalez texted upper management in an effort to voice displeasure about Bobby V.

This stuff has been going on since last September and a new story regarding franchise buffoonery pops up every day.

Well, today is Wednesday and video from earlier in the season of backup catcher Kelly Shoppach (who not so coincidentally was traded yesterday to the Mets) and first base coach Alex Ochoa seemingly ready to throw down in the dugout went viral (thanks to WEEI.com for the tip).

The best/worst part: Wait until the end of the video to watch a cup full of sunflower seeds from out of nowhere hit Ochoa in the face.
