Playing the Field: Jets fan can’t burn Sanchez jersey, Wade Boggs dances

Jets fans. Bless their hearts.

It’s a rapid-fire Tuesday here at PTF as we try to pack in as much sports as we can before the Holidays and that whole end of the world thing that’s happening this weekend.

We start with a holiday of its own in Jets Elimination Day, which predictably took place in agonizing fashion once again last night. There is no doubt that Jets fans take some sort of sick pleasure in the fact that their team is the definition of a crash-and-burn circus year-in and year-out. I mean, even Raiders fans have their limits.

Here is a stereotypical Jets fan, cigarette firmly in mouth, attempting to destroy his Mark Sanchez jersey last night immediately after the Jets lost to the Titans on Monday Night Football. Of course, even a task as simple as that didn’t go too well and had this guy successfully lit the jersey on fire we know now that Fireman Ed would not have been there to put out the flames. What a season.

The Wade Boggs shimmy

Kevin Youkilis, take heed. Red Sox fans can forgive. It may take 20 years, but the majority of the fan base can forgive. There is a growing push amongst Sox fans for Wade Boggs (growing up – the hero of most in the 28-to-35 year old age range), to be welcomed back into the family. Though he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame seven years ago, his number is still not retired at Fenway Park. Expect that to change very soon.

If some grudge-holders still can’t get that image of Boggs riding around Yankee Stadium on a police horse out of their heads, here is an image that should help the matter a bit. Here is the Wade Boggs “Fried Chicken Man” dance at an Oklahoma City Thunder game.

‘The Implant’

Score one for subtlety. Nets play-by-play man Ian Eagle dropped in a beauty of a Seinfeld reference the other night after Joe Johnson’s buzzer-beater. After all, Jerry Seinfeld was in the building and Johnson’s winning shot was, yes, “real and spectacular.”
