Heat wave energy-saving tips

Heat wave

With temps in the upper 90s, air conditioning is our best friend — that is until our energy bill arrives. American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning offers these tips to help us save energy during the hottest summer months:

If you live in a climate where it cools off at night, turn off your cooling system and open your windows while sleeping. When you wake in the morning, shut the windows and blinds to capture the cool air.

Install curtains or blinds to prevent heat gain through your windows during hot summer days.

According to the Alliance to Save Energy, the average household pays $2,300 on energy costs each year. Installing a programmable thermostat like an American Standard AccuLink Platinum ZV is a simple way to reduce your home’s energy costs. A programmable HVAC control can reduce energy consumption by up to 15 percent compared to traditional non-programmable thermostats. Modern HVAC control systems monitor both the indoor and outdoor temperatures of your home and use over time to help you better manage energy and comfort even further. Plus, the average annual savings for programmable thermostats is about $100, and they often pay for themselves in two years or less.

Replacing your old air conditioner with one with a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating of up to 20, like American Standard’s Platinum ZM air conditioner, can save you up to 60 percent on your annual cooling costs.

On average, homeowners should consider replacing or updating their HVAC system every 10 years. Replacing your old system with one that has a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating of up to 20 can mean a savings of up to 60 percent on your annual cooling costs.

— Keep your house warmer than normal when you are away, and lower the thermostat setting to 78°F (26°C) only when you are at home and need cooling.

— Turning on your ceiling fans will allow you to raise the thermostat setting about 4°F with no reduction in comfort
